Background
Howie has been at The News-Gazette since 1978. He has been a copy editor; beat reporter covering general assignment, education and municipal government; investigative reporter; and an editor in a variety of capacities. He has been city editor since 1999. He was a co-teacher of office computer applications at University Laboratory High School in Urbana from 1997 to 1999. His reporting has won a number of state and regional awards, and he has won the Associated Press Managing Editors national award for public service.
