Master of Science degree in Journalisms

Graduate courses
NEWS-EDITORIAL SEQUENCE

To graduate from the news-editorial sequence with a master's degree in journalism, a student must meet the general University and College requirements for the degree and must complete 32 hours, which are composed of the following courses. A typical sequence would be as follows:

JOUR 400 Reporting 1 (4 hours)
Fundamentals of journalistic writing; reporting news of public affairs.

JOUR 425 Graphics and Design (4 hours)
Principles of visual reporting and editing. Introduction to newspaper page design, information graphics research and design, photojournalism, online design, and project planning.

JOUR 505 Master's Proseminar (4 hours)
Introduction to scholarship and research in journalism and mass communication examining theoretical approaches to the meanings, uses, and effects of mass media in society; discussion of media freedom and accountability; humanistic and social scientific contributions to understanding mass communication.

JOUR 415 Reporting 2 (4 hours)
Study and extensive practice of in-depth public affairs reporting - its concepts, techniques, traditions, ethics, and social obligations.

JOUR 420 News Editing (4 hours)
Newspaper editing and headline writing, news judgment, ethics and leadership.

JOUR 500 Issues in Journalism (2 hours)
Seminar on issues of contemporary importance in journalism in their historical, multicultural contexts. Emphasis on ethical, legal, social, professional aspects of those issues. Aimed at helping students to develop their own journalism philosophies and high standards of conduct.

JOUR elective (3 hours)
Among the options are Advanced Reporting, Law and Communications, Business and Financial Reporting, Magazine Writing, International Reporting, Press and the Modern Presidency, Photojournalism and more. (See Course Catalog for specifics.)

JOUR 510 Readings (3 hours)
Readings in journalism analyzes journalism texts through written assignments in which students compare and contrast the works selected.

JOUR 515 Master's Project (4 hours)
A professional journalism project demonstrating development of analytical and critical thinking abilities appropriate to the profession and effective application of journalism methodology.

BROADCAST SEQUENCE

To graduate from the broadcast sequence with a master's degree in journalism, a student must meet the general University and College requirements for the degree and must complete 32 hours, which are composed of the following courses. A typical sequence would be as follows:

JOUR 400 Reporting 1 (4 hours)
Fundamentals of journalistic writing; reporting news of public affairs.

JOUR 435 Radio Journalism (4 hours)
Reporting and writing news for radio news programs.

JOUR 505 Master's Proseminar (4 hours)
Introduction to scholarship and research in journalism and mass communication examining theoretical approaches to the meanings, uses, and effects of mass media in society; discussion of media freedom and accountability; humanistic and social scientific contributions to understanding mass communication.

JOUR 440 Television Journalism 1 (4 hours)
Introduces TV news studio and field production and principles of field news reporting and editing; principles of planning, producing, and directing news and public affairs programs.

JOUR 510 Readings (3 hours)
Readings in journalism analyzes journalism texts through written assignments in which students compare and contrast the works selected.

JOUR 500 Issues in Journalism (2 hours)

JOUR 445 Television Journalism 2 (4 hours)
Advanced techniques for reporting, producing, writing, shooting, and editing television news stories and for producing and airing regularly scheduled news programs on deadline.

JOUR 515 Master's Project (4 hours)
A professional journalism project demonstrating development of analytical and critical thinking abilities appropriate to the profession and effective application of journalism methodology.
