UI-7 cable television channel

UI-7 logo

The mission of UI-7 is to be a vital local cable channel with professional-quality local programming that is relevant to the community — the campus, the communities of Urbana and Champaign and other constituencies with access to UI-7. The channel will serve as a resource to spotlight the University of Illinois and the campus community through programming that is by, or of interest to, the University of Illinois campus community.

Guidelines

Technical — Programming must be of professional, high quality. DVD is the preferred method, but other video formats may be accepted, at the discretion of the coordinator.

Timeliness — Programming must be of a timely nature, preferably produced sometime in the past several years, and should include recent events relevant to the subject matter. Priority will be given to newer material. However, programming focusing on historical subjects, which will not date themselves when aired, may be submitted for consideration.

Content — The content of programming should relate to the University of Illinois or the campus community. Normally this can be achieved in one of two ways: 1) focusing on a subject relating to, or of interest to, the U of I or the campus community or 2) programming produced by, or in partnership with, University faculty, staff or students.

Policies

Programming on UI-7 should be relevant to some segment of the University or campus community audience. All programming will have educational, governmental or artistic value. The UI-7 Coordinator and the Dean of the College of Media will have final discretion on whether any specific program is suitable for air.

The following list of programming is prohibited:

  • Any sexually obscene material or child pornography
Obscene is defined by applying the Miller test: (a) whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest; (b) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law; and (c) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.
  • Any content considered to be an invasion of privacy
  • Any material in violation of FCC regulations
  • Any direct appeals for funds

Procedures

Any person may submit a programming request. While preference may be given to those affiliated with the University of Illinois, UI-7 is open to any community member, as long as the guidelines and policies are met.

To submit a program for consideration, complete a submission request form — online at illinois.edu/goto/ui7request.

All submissions must be accompanied by written permission to air from the owner of the rights to the program. The person submitting the form should seek permission him/herself. The UI-7 Coordinator will confirm permission has been granted for each submission before airing the program.

Disclaimers will be used before and after programs if the UI-7 Coordinator determines it necessary to do so:

"The content and opinions presented in this program are not necessarily those of UI-7, the University of Illinois, or the cable provider. The University of Illinois does not condone or endorse speech that promotes fear, hatred, prejudice, or discrimination toward any group based on religion, ethnicity, race, gender, or sexual orientation."

"This program is considered to be of mature theme and, therefore, may be considered offensive to some viewers. Viewer/parental discretion is advised."
