January

Designs are fine-tuned.

February

Construction begins; energy simulation models are developed and revised, and appliance designs created.

April 16

"House foaming" party is held to show installation of urethane foam insulation.

May

Exterior sheathing is applied, windows and doors installed, drywell hung, conduits for wiring and plumbing installed, exterior deck and solar array built.

June 14, 15

Each module of the house is moved from east campus warehouse, where construction took place, to south edge of campus, on the concrete pads just north of the Veterinary Medicine Building.

INTERESTING FACT: The concrete pads were installed several years ago in the event of a local outbreak of SARS. They were intended to serve as the foundation for a structure to be used as "command central" in case of an epidemic of the disease in Champaign County. Fortunately, no epidemic materialized.

June-August

Exterior siding is applied, deck and other exterior components are set up, painting is done, cabinets are installed, plumbing and electrical are finished.

August-September

Testing is conducted; interior finish work is completed.

August 25

Sponsor recognition banquet held on campus to honor all of the generous donations of time, expertise, funds and products that have helped make elementhouse a reality.

August-September

Testing is conducted; interior finish work is completed.

September 22

Open house, with public tours of elementhouse, and an opportunity for visitors to sign and comment in the team's guest book.

Oct. 2-20

Assembly and competition happens on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where the 20 solar homes will be on display and open to the public.

October to ???

Elementhouse continues to serve the public as a tour destination in its new location at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd., Chicago, on the city's west side.
