Law is one class in which you must stay awake. Professor Steven Helle is
known for his Socratic method of teaching-that is, if you are not prepared,
watch out. You might be caught answering questions on last week's court-case
readings!
“It's considered one of the harder courses,” says news-editorial graduate Lisa
Schenker.
How tough is Professor Helle?
Helle is very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject of law, and he has
high expectations for his students to study with a similar passion. There is no
chance for sleeping here-everyone's got to be alert.
Why is this class mandatory for all communications students?
As a reporter and writer, there are things that can make you a liability to your
paper if you are not careful. This class teaches the inner-workings of a
journalist's First Amendment rights.
What are the tests like?
There are three exams comprised of multiple choice questions and essays. They
test your understanding and application of principles rather than the details of
the cases themselves.
