What is a gerund? Can you spot dangling modifiers? Passive voice? Although
much of what you'll learn in JOUR 420 sounds like a repeat of what you should
have learned the first time around in grammar school, the techniques you learn
will help you become both a better writer and a better editor.
JOUR 420 is a class that easily can be taken simultaneously with any other class
in the journalism program. Although there is not a lot of outside work, it's
important to stay organized and jump on the big projects early to avoid getting
behind.
When does the class meet?

Selection
What do you do in class?
Lab time is spent editing exercises and doing peer critiques.
What are the assignments like?
Aside from lab work, students are required to compile an editing portfolio of 20
news articles they've found with editing mistakes. There is also a research
paper due at the end of the semester.
Are there any exams?
There are exams and a final.
Are there quizzes?
During the first few weeks of the semester, there are open-book quizzes based on
the AP Stylebook. Also, current events quizzes may be given during labs
throughout the semester.
How do I do well?
Do not miss lab because the largest percent of your grade comes from lab work.
Try not to miss lecture either because there are always questions from lecture
on the exam. Also, always bring your AP Stylebook to class.
