Professor Frank W. Scott started the journalism department.
It began with a class that was part of the English department.
The first journalism class was offered at the University
in 1902. The description read "the making of summaries and abstracts,
advertising, proof-reading and the preparation of manuscripts for the
press." Two years later a second course was offered.
Between 1907 and 1908 four courses were added: newspaper
writing, extended assignments, editing and editorial writing, and agricultural
journalism. The following year the classes were consolidated into newspaper
writing and advanced newspaper writing.
In 1909 Scott persuaded the University to offer a
four-year journalism curriculum.

where the Union stands today. Illini Hall later was demolished.
