Elio Leturia (MS ’92, journalism), associate professor of journalism at Columbia College Chicago, art directed and designed the book XVI Concurso Nacional de Nacimientos (XVI National Nativity Contest), which was published last December by the Instituto Cultural, Teatral y Social (ICTYS) in Lima, Peru.

The illustrated 80-page book, sponsored by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture and the Catholic University of Peru, presents the work of 68 Peruvian folk artists who interpret their vision of the Christian Nativity through different tridimensional media. The artists, who come from all states in Peru, wrote their own texts and used ceramics, wood, stone, textiles, alabaster, gourds, walnut seeds, pâpier maché, sterling silver, glass, among others in their artistic endeavors.

Leturia pursued graduate studies at UIUC as a Fulbright Foreign student and has recently been granted a Senior Fulbright Award. He will be teaching and researching at the School of Communications of the Universidad de Málaga in Spain this coming Spring 2022.
